Installation, updating and removing add-ons

  • Make sure that you have the right add-on for your device.  See the downloads section above.
  • RAIDiator 4, RAIDiator 5. Follow the instructions in the Replicate Add-on Manual for your device.  For more information, see https://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/RN00RPL1%20Replicate%20for%20Desktop
  • RAIDiator 4, RAIDiator 5. You can remove and reinstall add-ons separately or you can upgrade over the existing add-on.  When removing an add-on, you can either clear the data if you want to start over or you can choose to keep the data.
  • ReadyNAS OS 6. There is no way to uninstall or upgrade add-ons separately because the functionality is built in to the OS.  You can, however, update or reinstall the firmware.

Problems connecting a NAS to the portal

Symptoms. You cannot connect initially, register a license or account, or NAS displays greyed out on the Replicate portal.

  • Check the Internet connectivity, such as DHCP, IP settings, default gateway, DNS, or a proxy.
  • Make sure that you are using the latest firmware for your NAS and the latest add-on version for RAIDiator 4 and RAIDiator 5.
  • RAIDiator 4. Make sure that your copy of Replicate is licensed.
  • If your NAS does not show up in the portal at all, make sure that your NAS is registered to the ReadyNAS Remote account you are using to log in to https://www.replicate.readynas.com/.

Problems creating jobs

  • Check the Internet connectivity and service connectivity on both NASes.
  • Make sure that the Replicate service is enabled and running on both NASes.
  • System backup is only available on RAIDiator 4 Replicate, but on RAIDiator 5 and ReadyNAS OS 6, you can back up all data off the volume and download the configuration separately.

Communication problems between NASes

Errors codes in Replicate portal logs. 50, 51, 122, 300, 501

  • Check the Internet connectivity and service connectivity on both sides.
  • ReadyNAS OS 6. ReadyNAS Remote should be enabled on both sides.
  • For restrictive firewalls and more complex networks, consider setting up port forwarding.
  • Remove Replicate user binding and re-add the NASes to the Replicate account.  Then, recreate the backups.  Use the “resume from…” option to avoid having to send all of the data again.

Jobs not starting (on time)

  • If the job not starting at the right time, make sure that the time and time zone settings on both NASes are set correctly.
  • If the job is not be starting at all, check the logs in Replicate.  Check the “Communication problems between NASes” steps.
  • Remove the old job.  Recreate and choose “resume from…” and select the folder of the old job.

Jobs not finishing

You can run the initial sync a number of different ways.

  • The preferred order of speed:
    • Initial sync on LAN, then move to a different location.
    • First copy using a different method, such as USB, and then use the "Resume from" function.
    • Initial sync over the Internet.  This approach is the slowest.
    • RAIDiator 4. Since you might run out of snapshot space, turn off snapshots for the initial sync.  You can enable snapshots after the first full run.
  • Incremental sync not finishing:
    • The job could just be slow.  For more information see Performance problems below.
    • RAIDiator 4.  The job is running out of snapshot space and displays the message "Snapshot invalidated."  Either run the jobs more often, only run the jobs after-hours, or split the job into multiple jobs.
    • Not enough space exists on the destination.  Edit the job to lower the number of revisions that are kept.

Performance problems

  • Possible reasons for a slow copy on the same network:
    • Turn off compression and encryption, especially for smaller NASes.
    • The job does a full copy every time.
    • Select the material to back up and when to back it up.
  • Possible reasons for slow copy over the Internet:
    • Be aware of your Internet upload and download speeds.  Upload speed on the sending side can be quite limited.
    • Select the material to back up and when to back it up.
    • Turn on compression, especially for slower Internet connections.
    • The message "using relayed connection" displays in Replicate portal logs.  This message indicates that the NASes cannot connect directly, usually due to network firewalls.  Consider setting up port forwarding.
  • The following errors codes in Replicate portal logs: 1-14, 20-25, 30, 35
    • Either the Internet connection is down or something is wrong with the data or their permissions.  Check the logs to find out if the problem is with a particular file.
    • If the error code happens just once, run the job again.  The job resumes from were it left off.
    • When the error code happens multiple times, check the “Jobs not finishing” and “Communication problems between NASes” section to find out if there are error messages about the connection or if “Copy Failed” errors are occurring.
    • If the problem is with certain files or folders, see if you can access those files normally.  Do a permissions reset on the share in question.

If you are still having trouble, reboot both NASes.  Otherwise, contact support.  When asked, provide the logs, Remote Access to the NASes in question, and the Replicate username and password.
