Prerequisites for setting permissions with ReadyCLOUD
Before you set permissions in ReadyCLOUD, you must perform the following two tasks:
- Sign in to ReadyCLOUD with your MyNETGEAR account. For more information about how to create a MyNETGEAR account, see Using MyNETGEAR for the first time
- Ensure that your ReadyNAS storage system is in Local Users mode. For instructions on how to configure Local Users mode, see How do I configure Local Users mode on my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system?
Best practices for setting permissions with ReadyCLOUD
By default, when you grant access to ReadyCLOUD users, those users can view all shares on your ReadyNAS system unless the permission settings on the shares restrict read and write permissions.
Best practice is to be aware of how much access you are granting so that you can give each user the correct level of access. For more information about restricting access, see the ReadyCLOUD software manual or ReadyNAS OS 6: Set Up Access Rights to Files and Folders
Differences between ReadyCLOUD permissions and local permissions
ReadyCLOUD and the local admin interface use different approaches for setting permissions. ReadyCLOUD works in conjunction with SMB and AFP protocols, synchronizing access rights across them. In contrast, the local admin interface allows more granular control per protocol and per share.
Unequal SMB and AFP permissions
ReadyCLOUD merges SMB and AFP permissions values so that the most restrictive permission takes precedence. For example, if AFP permission for the Everyone group is read-only and SMB permission for the Everyone group is read-write, ReadyCLOUD uses read-only for the Everyone group.
