NETGEAR fully managed switches such as the M4250, M4300, and M4350 series switches as well as legacy switches have a console port. Depending on the switch model, you can access the DB9 RS232 console port, mini USB console port, or RJ-45 RS232 console port. Usually, these ports are located on the switch's rear panel.
Use the mini USB console cable (included with the switch) or a null-modem cable (not included with the switch), which has a 9-pin connector on each end, to connect a VT100/ANSI terminal, Window-based computer, Mac, Linux-based computer, or UNIX workstation to a console port on the switch.
Note 1: If your switch has both DB9 and mini USB console ports, pay attention to the console selector switch on the rear panel. Select which console port is active.
Note 2: If your switch is in a stack, connect to the console port on the stack management switch. The stack management switch is indicated by an LED indicator.
Access the command-line interface (CLI):
- If you connect a computer to a console port on the switch, start a terminal emulation program:
- Windows: On a computer with a Windows operating system, you can use an application such as PuTTY, HyperTerminal, or Tera Term.
- Mac: On a computer with a Mac operating system, you can use an application such as ZTerm.
- Linux: On a computer with a Linux operating system, you can use an application such as Minicom.
- Unix: On a UNIX workstation, you can use an application such as Xterm
- Configure the following settings:
- Baud rate: 115200 (some older models use a baud rate of 9600. The required baud rate is stated next to the console port on the switch.)
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bit: 1
- Flow control: None
- Enter admin as the user name, do not enter a password, and press Enter.
The default user name is admin and the default password is blank (that is, do not enter a password).
On first login, the switch forces you to specify a password. Subsequent times that you log in, you must use the password that you specified.
