Active Directory mode requires an Active Directory server. In Active Directory mode, you do not use your ReadyNAS system to manage your users and groups. Instead, you manage them with your Active Directory database, and the changes are transferred to your ReadyNAS system every 12 hours.
To configure Active Directory mode:
- Log in to your ReadyNAS system.
- From the local admin page, select Accounts > Authentication.
- From the Access Type drop-down menu, select Active Directory.
The Workgroup Name field changes to NetBIOS Domain Name and all fields become available. - Configure the settings as follows:
- NetBIOS Domain Name.
Enter the name of the NetBIOS domain. Normally, the NetBIOS domain name is identical to the prefix of the DNS realm name. For example, in the DNS realm name company.community.com, company is the prefix and community is the suffix, so the NetBIOS domain name is company.
If the FQDN prefix matches the NetBIOS Domain Name, you can enter AUTO in this field.
If the NETBIOS naming scheme is different, you must enter the NetBIOS Domain Name exactly. - DNS Realm Name (FQDN).
Enter the DNS realm name, which is normally the DNS domain name or the Active Directory domain name. For example, company.community.com. - Container OU.
Specify the location of the computer account of the ReadyNAS in the Active Directory. By default, the computer account for the ReadyNAS is placed in the Computers organizational unit (OU), but you can use the Container OU field to specify another OU. You can specify OUs by specifying the lowest-level OU first (the OU closest to the root of the Active Directory) with further OUs separated by a forward slash. For example, First_Level_OU/Second_Level_OU or Sales/Computers/Servers.
Note: The name of the computer account (also referred to as the machine account) is the same as the host name of the ReadyNAS. For more information, see How do I change the host name on my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system? - Include Trusted Domains.
Enabling this option allows users and groups from trusted domains to be used on the ReadyNAS system.
Note: When enabled, users and groups from trusted domains do not appear in the ReadyNAS Admin Page but can be used to specify Access Control Lists (ACLs) using Windows folder security directly. - Administrator Name.
Enter the name of the administrator of the Active Directory. - Administrator Password.
Enter the password of the administrator of the Active Directory. - Directory Server address.
Enter the IP address of the Active Directory server. - Do not cache ADS accounts locally.
If this check box is clear, the ReadyNAS system imports a list of users and groups from the Active Directory server.
If the option is selected, the ReadyNAS system does not import a list of users and groups from the Active Directory server. For more information, see ReadyNAS OS 6 - Do not cache ADS accounts locally option - ADS ID Map.
Import or export Active Directory ID maps between ReadyNAS OS 6 devices.
- NetBIOS Domain Name.
- Click Apply.
Your changes are saved. - (Optional) Click the Refresh ADS Accounts button.
User and group information on your ReadyNAS system is updated immediately.
For more information about managing users and groups with Active Directory, see your Active Directory documentation.
Keep the following precautions in mind when using Active Directory mode:
- Your Active Directory server and your ReadyNAS system must have the same time set on their system clocks. NETGEAR recommends that you choose your domain controller as your Network Time Protocol (NTP) server to ensure that time settings are the same.
- The DNS server that you use must be able to resolve the host name of the domain controller. NETGEAR recommends that you point your ReadyNAS system to the Active Directory DNS for proper DNS resolution.
