Dynamic DNS (DDNS) provides a stable domain name for a network, allowing users to consistently access a network even when an Internet service provider (ISP) might change the network’s IP address.
For Internet users to access your network, they must know your IP address. You might need this ability if you run your own web server, or if you use your router to make a VPN connection. However, most ISPs frequently change your network's IP address, using a protocol called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Because your IP address changes often, keeping up with the changes can be challenging.
DDNS solves this problem by creating an account for you that registers an unchanging name, such as myname.noip.com. When you configure your NETGEAR router to use DDNS, it automatically substitutes your registered host name for the current IP address, no matter what your ISP has changed it to. As a result, you can reach your network by entering your host name without needing to keep track of your network’s IP address.
